beverlygomezBeverly Gomez created history by capturing Jamaica's first sailing medal at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games after securing a bronze in the women's wind surf in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico yesterday.

The 22-year-old Gomez, part of a two-member Jamaican sailing team in Puerto Rico, finished behind winner Demita Vega of Mexico.

Secretary of the Royal Jamaica Yacht Club, Paula Jackson, told the Observer she had spoken to Gomez who was ecstatic about her performance.

"She has been away from the sport for two years, hampered by lack of funds to travel overseas. From here, she hopes to grow from strength to strength and (also) she hopes to go to the Olympics," Jackson said.

Gomez' bronze was Jamaica's 15th of the Games and 35th overall.
