7 races were sailed in various wind from full planning to marginal, and light wind. Even a storm came through on day two and gave us all a good warm shower!
Nick Dempsey [GBR], 2010 World Champion, went head-to-head with ivan Pastor [ESP] for top spot. That is when he went out to race as Nick was definitely using the RS:X North Americans as a warm up, not participating in all races.
Ivan therefore just cruised through to the top step of the podium. The fight for 2nd place was much hotter. Our very own Japanese samurai, Makoto Tomizawa went all out to crush Nicolas Huguet. Finally Makoto took control and the silver medal, leaving Nico the bronze. Remember that Nico has now got a J.O.B. so is not able to train full time anymore. It's nice to see old friends still kicking butt at the front of the fleet.
So what of the North American competition? Ben Barger [USA] took 4th overall and was crowned North American Champion.
Over in the women's fleet, Bryony Shaw [GBR], 2008 Olympic bronze medallist was in fine form. Locking horns Nicola Girke [CAN] who hung on to 2nd overall to claim the North American Championship title.
The Formula, Techno 293 and Kona Fleets were out racing too.
The Shake-a-Leg organization was on top of everything and even provided food/barbecue/happy hour every day. So a great atmosphere for socialising and racing too. Thanks go to Silvia, Meredith and all the volunteers who put it together for us.
So now, all eyes turn to the Miami OCR which is event 2 of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. This starts on the 24th January. All the top RS:X racers are gonna be on fire!
Let's follow the action...
