Well... Beijing Olympic windsurfer, Zac Plavsic and two partners are seeing to it that Vancouver residents get in on the act by paying the three to recycle their mattresses. The recycling mattress biz is set to boom this year.
With mattresses banned from the dump and the Metro fee now in place, they expect to process 40,000 to 80,000 beds in 2011 – as much as a ten-fold increase from less than 8,000 in 2010.
Even at the low end, that makes a $500,000 + gross without even monetising the back end polyurethane, metal, wood and cotton.
Zac says "It's a very labour-intensive process. It's pretty much a breakeven business. We're trying to do a service for the environment."
