2008 New Zealand Nationals

008 RS:X New Zealand National Championship
Day One - Dec 14th

Day One of the RS:X New Zealand National Championship was bright and sunny with a moderate sea breeze giving the New Zealand athletes the chance to size up the foreign competition ahead of the 2008 Worlds which are due to start on Jan 10th 08. On the other hand, the foreign competition is doing all it can to learn all it can about the local winds and water. Vital research for both groups!

The men fleet comprising 48 riders from 18 countries completed 3 races with the top 2 kiwis, JP Tobin and Tom Ashley mixing it with the best Europe could offer. Julien Bontemps (FRA6) heads the leader board with Joao Rodriques (POR75), Caspar Boumann (NED1) right up there with him.

The Women’s fleet comprising 35 riders from 19 countries completed 2 races. This time it seems that the top 5 are all Europeans with a battle developing in the Italian camp between 2 time Olympic medal winner Alessandra Sensini (ITA 25)  and the new kid on the block, Flavia Tartaglini (ITA 1). Barbara Kendall (NZL 15) lies in 7th place with two consistent top 10 finishes.

With two more days of racing to take place, the RS:X Nationals will be the last formal racing before the 2008 RS:X World Championship. 120 men and nearly 80 women are entered for this, the last qualification event for nations wishing to compete at the 2008 Olympic Regatta in Qingdao, China.

11/29/07
Due to security, weather conditions, and a 'no anchoring zone' there will be NO boat storage overnight directly in front of or next to Takapuna Boating Club.

During the day, however there will be a clearly marked buoyed area northeast of the Boating Club where a coach boat can be anchored for short-term day use only on a first come first serve bases.

The 'no anchoring zone' stretches across the front of the Boat Club due to international cable lines that connect New Zealand to the rest of the World. The consequences of damaging these lines are huge:

1) The regatta will be stopped until they are fixed,
2) NZ will be cut off from the rest of the world,
3) The cost will be in the millions of dollars
4) Mostly likely there will never be another World Event in Takapuna.

It is very important everyone follows the rules and guidelines to anchoring (mooring) their boats. Anchoring is only permitted in clearly marked buoyed area northeast of the Takapuna Boating Club for DAY USE ONY.

We ask for your cooperation, team work and understanding. Strict adherence to the restrictions and rules is a must. We have organized nightly boat storage at Bayswater Marina.

To learn more about Bayswater Marina, facilities, and location: www.bayswater.co.nz

Bayswater is approximately a 20 minute boat ride from Takapuna Boating Club in 'good' weather.

Overnight storage is available and has been reserved for RSX Worlds event at Bayswater Marina. This includes both wet storage (on the water) and dry storage (off the water).

Launching Facilities:
• A four wheel drive vehicle will be provided to assist in launching and boat storage

Fuel Access:
• 95 Octane Gas and Diesel are available at BaysWater Marine
o Accepted Payment: Credit card and Eftpos

To Contact Bayswater Marina:
• Administration, Anita: phone 09 446 1600, email anita@bayswater.co.nz
• Security: phone 09 446 1616, email security@bayswater.co.nz

The only overnight parking near the Takapuna Club is strictly reserved for boats used for the regatta such as rescue boats, committee boat, and mark boats. There will be NO room for coach boats in this area during the night. All coach boats MUST be removed at night. For coach boats there is DAY USE ONLY anchoring northeast of Takapuna Boating Club inside the marked buoyed area. If you have your own tow vehicle and overnight storage location away from site you can use the public launch ramp northeast of the Club.

Rules and Restrictions:
• No overnight storage or anchoring on the water near the Boat Club
• Only limited day use anchoring northeast of the Boat Club in a clearly marked buoyed area.
• Never anchor outside buoyed area due to danger of damage to underground cables.

Day in life of a Coach Boat:
A) Pick up and fuel boat at BaysWater Marina
B) 20 minute boat ride to Takapuna Boating Club
C) Day parking only, in clearly marked buoyed area northeast of the Club
D) Coach, chase around sailors
E) 20 minute boat ride back to BaysWater Marina
F) Store boat overnight either on the water or off

We appreciate your cooperation.

Best wishes to all coaches and competitors!
