BREAKING NEWS RS:X YOUTH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007

In beautiful, windy weather the final races of the first ever ISAF RS:X Youth World Championship took place today. Amongst the races held the most exciting medal race both for Youth Men and Women. The main contenders for the World Championship were the current ISAF World Champion Pierre Le Coq, representing Germany Christian Freimueller and the British sailor Richard Hamilton. After a thrilling final run, where the best amongst the main contenders for gold was Richard Hamilton (fourth place), the final classification changed. The new World Champion in the Olympic RS:X class is Christian Freimueller, in front of Richard Hamilton and Pierre Le Coq, who finished the medal race eighth losing his second place just by one point to Hamilton.

The medal race in the women category turned out very well for Maja Dziarnowska (Poland), who outclassed her rivals and finished first (second overall). Second in today’s race was Alisha Kawalla who finished just ahead of Hei Man Chan. In the overall classification of the Youth RS:X Women World Championship Moana Delle came in before Maja Dziarnowska and Regina Stadler.

In the Under21 category everything was already decided yesterday, when Ma?gorzata Bia?ecka and ?ukasz Grodzicki already had a large enough advantage over their competitors to ensure first place in their category.

In spite of weak wind 3-5 m/s, we were able to conduct planned races in the Youth category. Due to this it will be possible to have the medal race tomorrow. The best ten Youths both men and women will compete for the ISAF RS:X Youth World Championship. In the medal race the sailors obtain a double amount of points therefore making it a very exciting event. After today's racing Christian Freimuller is in the lead. His biggest rivals tomorrow will be The current ISAF RS:X World Champion Pierre Le Coq and the British sailor Richard Hamilton. After race 9 and 10 Moana Delle is strongly in the lead amongst women. Second is also representing Germany Regina Stadler and Maja Dziarnowska from Poland.

 

Amongst the Under 21 sailors still in the leas are representing Poland Malgorzata Bialecka and Lukasz Grodzicki, who are steadily marching towards victory in their categories.

Both of these sailors will most probably represent Poland in August's pre-Olympic regatta in China.

Yesterday’s sunny day was time to rest both for the judges and competitors. Thanks to having completed all planned races, we were able to use the whole day for rest. The sailors visited Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia, which make up a interesting complex of three different cities. Many participants of the regatta went shopping for typical Polish silver and amber jewelry. Some used their three time for shopping others rested after Tuesday’s grill party.

Today welcomed us with beautiful summer weather. After breakfast was the coach meeting, which was supervised by Ilker Bayindir- Event Class Supervisor.
After the coach meeting the youth sailors went on the water. The previous races were conducted in rainy weather, therefore sun was welcomed by all. The races started on time. At 11:00 the first of today’s planned races begun– The Gold group of YOUTH MEN. Then at 11:10 the Silver group of the same category started and at 11:30 the YOUTH WOMEN group. As the day is sunny there are many spectators of today’s regatta.

The French ISAF World Champion Pierre Le Coq competed in the Gold group today. He was fourth in the first race, and finished the second race as first. As up to now he is second in the general classification. The best of the Poles Jan Suli?ski is currently ninth in the classification.

In the Youth Women category the German sailor Moana Delle after winning two races today is first overall. Despite beautiful weather there were losses in equipment. In the last race of the day Maja Dziarnowska sailed into a floating branch and broke her mast.

Poles still lead in both RS:X Under 21 groups. In the first two places of the men category are Lukasz Grodzicki and Artur Nowicki. Likewise two Polish sailors Malgorzata Bialecka and Iga Perzyna lead in their women category.

Today’s racing took place in sun and rain in turns, with wind up to 8m/s two races were conducted for all the categories.

The competition was fierce especially in the YOUTH MEN category, where the leader of the overall classification changed twice today. After today’s first race Pierre Le Coq FRA 377 the ISAF RS:X World Champion gained the lead over his competitors, however after an unlucky sixth race, where he was sixth, Richard Hamilton GBR 75 regained it for himself.

Today sailors completed all scheduled races in every category. The races took place in variable wind conditions, at times in heavy rain. Leading after four races in the YOUTH MEN category is GBR 75, Hamilton Richard and in the YOUTH WOMEN GER 515, Stadler Regina. Leading in the older Under 21 category are two Polish sailors POL 738 Grodzicki Micha? (MEN), and POL 21 Bialacka Ma?gorzata (WOMEN).

114 competitors from 16 countries and 3 continents have entered the first RS:X Youth World Championship in Sopot, Poland. The event is supported by the RS:X Under 21 Class Championship. 65 Youth boys, divided into two groups, are here to do battle with Pierre Le Coq (FRA377), who has just returned from winning the gold medal at the 2007 ISAF Youth World Championship in Kingston, Canada.

After all the formalities of measurement and the practice race, the official opening ceremony took place last Saturday evening on Europe’s longest wooden pier with the mayor of Sopot Jacek Karnowski as the guest of honour.

Day one on Sunday, saw Pierre Le Coq (FRA 377) lying in 4th place overall having posted a 10th and 2nd. His compatriot, Damien Roussel (FRA 21) had a much more consistent day taking two steady 3rds but fighting it out at the head of the fleet Richard Hamilton (GBR 75 – 1,3) and Christian Freimueller (GER 550 – 4,1) look like they mean business.

Over in the girls fleet, Alisha Kawalla (AUS 14- 2,2) heads the fleet  with Regina Stadler (GER 515 – 5,1) and Maja Dziarnowska (POL 7- 6,3) second and third respectively. Man Hei Chan (HKG 5-3,8) is 4th.

114 competitors from 16 countries stood at the starting line of the first ever RS:X Youth World Championship. Youth under 19 will compete for the world championship. Sailors under 21 – have class championships. The fleet with the most competitors is the RS:X Youth Men with 65 sailors. They have been divided into two groups yellow and blue. Registration and measurement was open for two days. Saturday’s practice race was interrupted by wind condition. (lack of wind).
The official opening ceremony took place on Saturday evening on Europe’s longest wooden pier. The regatta was opened by the mayor of Sopot Jacek Karnowski.
